We Will Go By Law, Not By Emotions; Constitution Is ‘Bhagavad Gita’: K’taka HC On Hijab Case

Mumbai: Karnataka High Court is hearing a plea against the hijab ban in several junior colleges in parts of the state. The High Court also said, “We will go by what Constitution says. Constitution is the Bhagavad Gita for me.”

The Advocate General told the Karnataka High Court that the colleges have been given autonomy to decide the uniform. The Advocate General also said that students who want exemption will approach the College Development Committee, news agency ANI reported.

Senior advocate Devdutt Kamat, representing the petitioner, submitted that wearing of a headscarf is an important part of Muslim tradition.

Karnataka Police reportedly resorted to lathi-charge as incidents of stone-pelting were reported during student protests in Bagalkot and Shivamogga among other districts.

Section 144 has been imposed in Shivamogga after violence erupted in the district.

Protests also took a serious turn at Mandya PES College as hijab-clad students raised slogans of ‘Allah ho Akbar’ and Hindu students chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram.

The hijab controversy also affected IDSG College in Chikmagalur. Students wearing hijab and saffron shawl were stopped at the entrance of Shanteshwar Pre University College in Indi town of Vijayapura district.

After being turned out the students gathered in front of the college and raised slogans. Meanwhile, another group emerged with blue shawls supporting the wearing of hijab by the Muslim students. This led to chaos and police had to rush and control the situation.
