Mumbai: As the pegasus spyware has taken tons of people into its radar in India, the most popular messaging service, Whatsapp download falls by 80 % in India.
WhatsApp, which prides itself on its encrypted messaging capabilities, has filed a complaint in a California court accusing spyware company NSO Group and its parent company Q Cyber Technologies of targeting at least 1,400 users across the world.
Pegasus is a spyware that can be installed on devices running certain versions of iOS, Apple’s mobile operating system, developed by the Israeli cyber arms firm, NSO Group. It can track your location, password, messages, calls and gathers all information about your phone.
According to the Business standard report between Oct 26 to Nov 3 the Whatsapp download fails to 80% in India during this observation period.
The numbers before the NSO group revelation was 8.9 million between Oct 17 and 25, and the week after was 1.8 million. On the other hand, Signal, an end-to-end encrypting messaging app, saw downloads rise by 63% and Telegram’s downloads rose by 10% to 920,000.
The signal is a completely open-source, free, secure, and private instant messaging platform, just like WhatsApp and Telegram is a cloud-based instant messaging and voice over IP service.
According to Sensor tower, these figures are ‘unique downloads as per Google account or Apple ID’. These figures represent unique downloads, defined as “one download per Apple ID or Google account.”
