Will Change Names Of Places Contrary To Our Culture In Assam: CM Sarma

Mumbai: Assam government will launch a portal to invite suggestions for changing the names of cities, towns or villages across the state, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Taking to Twitter, the Chief Minister said, “THERE’S MUCH IN A NAME. Name of a city, town or village should represent its culture, tradition and civilisation.” Sarma informed that a portal will be launched to invite suggestions on change of names across Assam which are “contrary to our civilisation, culture and derogatory to any caste or community”.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Chief Minister of Assam, while speaking at the Bhoomipujan of the Second Medical College in Guwahati, had said that the names of some places including Kalafar and other towns and villages of Assam would be changed.

“There are many place names in Assam which people do not feel comfortable speaking and some find it derogatory to the communities. Hence these need to be changed,” he said.

In September last year, a major controversy erupted after the Assam cabinet renamed the Rajiv Gandhi National Park as Orang National Park. Sarma did this after meeting the tea tribe community, who requested a change of name.

Later, the chief minister clarified that there was no tradition in Assam to name national parks after political leaders, but Congress broke the tradition in the early 2000s.
