Will Resume Agitation If Govt Fails To Deliver On Promises: Farmers’ Body

Mumbai: Farmers staged protests in several states, burnt effigies and submitted memoranda in the President’s name through officials. They alleged the government hasn’t acted upon the promises, based on which the year-long agitation was withdrawn last year.

The SKM, in a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind, alleged that the government did not fulfil any of its promises, including forming a committee on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and withdrawing cases against the protesters.

“The Morcha warns the BJP government against challenging the farmers’ patience, and declares that if the promises are not fulfilled at the earliest, the farmers will be left with no option but to resume the agitation,” the SKM said.

The SKM further said that it should be noted that none of the assurances given by the Central Government in its letter to the SKM dated December 9, 2021, have been fulfilled.

Since November 2020, thousands of farmers have been protesting at the borders of the national capital. The agitation began with a demand for repeal of three agriculture laws passed in Parliament in September 2020.

Farmers were concerned about new laws that would have opened the country’s agricultural markets to private companies. However, the Center had claimed that the law would give farmers greater access to markets and boost productivity through private investment.

After more than a year of protests, on the occasion of Guru Parab on 19 November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the laws would be repealed. Parliament repealed the laws on 29 November.
