Will Set Up Vodka Manufacturing Plant To Prevent Potato Wastage: Akhilesh Yadav

Mumbai: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday addressed a poll event in Agra and said his party will build a potato processing unit there.

“We will build a potato processing unit here and if needed we will also build a vodka plant. Tell me whether vodka can be made from potatoes or not?” he asked people during a poll event in Agra.

The SP chief said that this area is famous for potato crops, but due to the lack of government’s cooperation, the product has been ruined.

“As a mark of protest, the Samajwadi Party had thrown its potato produce outside the chief minister’s residence in Lucknow (in January 2018),” he reminded. The BJP-led government, he alleged, had assured that they would buy potatoes from farmers, but did not do so.

Taking a jibe at the BJP, Yadav also said that the market share of vodka has increased over the years.

“I want to assure you that we will provide a subsidy of Rs 100-200 crore to set up an industry to process potatoes and make chips and snacks in the area. If needed, we will also provide a sapling for making vodka. Waste of potato grown by the farmers of this region,” he added.

Elections to the 403-seat UP Assembly is slated to be held in seven phases starting from February 10. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
