Woman, Son Drown In River During Picnic In Chhattisgarh

Mumbai: A 40-year-old woman and her minor son drowned in a river while going for a picnic with other family members in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district. A police officer gave this information on Monday.

The incident took place near Lofundi village under the Koni police station area on Sunday evening when the victim Smita Lal (40) her son Avesh (14) and others were trying to cross the Arpa river on foot, they said.

He said that as per preliminary information, eight members of three families, all natives of Bilaspur city, had gone for a picnic together near Lofundi village.

They first crossed the river and reached an island situated in the middle of the reservoir. While returning from the island, Lal and his son slipped in deep water and drowned, the official said.

Another woman and her 5-year-old son, who were part of the group, also slipped into the deep water, but her husband managed to save them, they said.

As soon as the information was received, some villagers and police reached the spot.

Both the bodies were later retrieved from the river and sent to the hospital for postmortem, police said.
