Zakir Shaikh Arrested For Links With Terrorist Received Call From Pakistan: Maharashtra ATS

Zakir, booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, was arrested by Maharashtra ATS from suburban Jogeshwari in Mumbai

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Wednesday informed that Zakir Hussain Shaikh, who was arrested last month in a case of “criminal conspiracy to commit terrorist acts”, had received calls from Pakistan.

Maharashtra ATS chief Vineet Agarwal said, “During the investigation, terror suspect Zakir Shaikh’s Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls revealed that he received calls from Pakistan. It can’t be confirmed that numbers were from Pakistan but IP address was of Pakistan.”

Zakir, booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, was arrested by Maharashtra ATS from suburban Jogeshwari in Mumbai during an operation on September 17 in connection with the Pakistan-supported terror module busted by Delhi Police in September.

He along with two other terror suspects Rizwan Monim & Irfan Shaikh are under Maharashtra ATS custody till October 11.

The ATS had earlier said that Zakir revealed that he had been receiving instructions from his handlers based in a foreign country.

It told a special court in Mumbai that Zakir was in touch with one Anthony alias Anwar alias Anas from “neighbouring country”. It had also told the court that he was hatching a criminal conspiracy to carry out terror attacks using explosives in Maharashtra and elsewhere.

Last month, the Delhi Police’s Special Cell had busted a “terror module” and arrested six men, including two terrorists trained by Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. Zakir was in touch with one of the six suspects Jan Mohammad Shaikh, a resident of Dharavi in Mumbai.
