23-Yr-Old Javelin Thrower Antil breaks World Record Thrice, Wins Gold At Paralympics

Mumbai: India’s 23-year-old javelin thrower Sumit Antil bagged gold in men’s javelin throw F64 event at Tokyo Paralympics. He broke the world record thrice during the final and won with a best throw of 68.55 metres.

Australia’s Michelle Burian won the silver medal with a throw of 66.29m and set a new world record in the sports category F44. Sri Lanka’s Dulan Kodithuvakku won the bronze medal with his best performance. Another Indian, Sandeep Choudhary finished fourth in the final with a season-best 62.20m.

Sumit, who finished first in the field, almost gave a tough job to all the contenders as he broke his own world record to reach the final with a throw of 66.95m. The previous world record was 62.88m, with Sumit improving by almost 4m in his first attempt. Sandeep meanwhile went for 61.13m in his first attempt.

Sumit looked like a man on a mission as he threw the javelin for another world record in his second attempt of the final for 68.08m. The Indian improved on the previous best which he did in his first attempt by 1.13m.

Meanwhile, Sandeep’s second attempt went invalid, while he covered 62.20 meters for the third, dropping him to fourth. A man in red-hot form, Sumit threw 65.27m and 66.71m in the third and fourth attempts.

For his fifth attempt, the Indian went big again and this time again broke the world record with a throw of 68.55m.
