Multiple People Stabbed At Mall In Sydney; Hundreds Evacuated

Mumbai: Hundreds of people were evacuated from a shopping mall in Sydney after reports claimed at least four people were killed in multiple stabbings and a possible shooting. Local media reported gunshots could be heard inside Westfield Mall at Bondi junction.

One of the witnesses said they saw a woman lying on the ground before sheltering in a jewellery store.

There is only one culprit, according to the police. Emergency personnel in New South Wales said that one man had been shot and killed by police. It is thought that the man is one of the attackers. It was also reported that eight patients were admitted to the hospital.

“I’ve been informed that this offender’s actions have resulted in the deaths of five victims,” Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke of the New South Wales police stated.

Cooke stated that while the purpose was not immediately apparent, “terrorism” could not be completely ruled out at this time.

“I do not know at this stage who he is. You would understand this is quite raw. Inquiries are very new and we are continuing to make attempts to identify the offender in this matter,” said Cooke.

“A critical incident has commenced following the shooting of a male at Bondi Junction. Just before 4 pm (Saturday 13 April 2024), emergency services were called to Westfield Bondi Junction following reports of multiple people stabbed. People are urged to avoid the area. Inquiries are continuing in relation to the incident and there are no further details,” the New South Wales police said in a post on X.

The sprawling Westfield Bondi Junction Mall complex has been locked down.
