36 Arrested Over Violence After BJP Leader’s Remarks On Prophet In UP

Mumbai: As many as 36 people were arrested and three FIRs were filed after violence broke out in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, officials said on Saturday. The incident occurred following BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad.

The situation is under control and police have been deployed at sensitive places with Commissioner of Police Vijay Singh Meena saying that strict action will be taken against the miscreants.

Security has also been increased in the area between Yatim Khana and Parade intersection in Kanpur.

He further said, “More people are being identified on the basis of the video and action will be taken against the conspirators under the Gangster Act and their property will either be confiscated or demolished.”

Violent clashes broke out between two groups of different communities in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on Friday over a market bandh.

Two people and a policeman were injured in the fight.

Violence broke out after some people tried to shut down the shops, which was opposed by another group.

Violence erupted in Kanpur after groups of people tried to force shopkeepers to shut shutters over an alleged insult to Prophet Mohammad on a television show.

Clashes broke out in the Parade, Nai Sadak and Yatimkhana areas of the city after Friday prayers.

When members of a group recently tried to shut shops over alleged derogatory remarks made by BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma during a televised debate, both sides hurled bombs and opened fire.

Some local leaders, including Maulana Mohammad Ali (MMA) Jauhar Fans Association chief Hayat Zafar Hashmi, had called for the closure of shops after Friday prayers to protest the remarks.

They also took out a procession, during which they encountered members of other communities, which eventually resulted in violent clashes.

Twelve companies of Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been sent to the area to maintain law and order.
