8,737 New Coronavirus Cases, 255 Deaths Reported In UP

UP: A senior government official said that Uttar Pradesh, which has seen a spurt in recent COVID-19 infections, is now witnessing a decline in fresh cases, with 8,737 new cases being reported on Tuesday taking the statewide tally to 16,37,663.

Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Amit Mohan Prasad said that the state reported 255 fresh deaths, bringing the COVID-19 toll to 18,072.

He said that the number of active cases has also come down to 1,36,342, while a total of 14,83,249 people have been cured so far and they have been discharged from hospitals, bringing the recovery rate in the state to 90.60 per cent.

He stated that 99,891 home isolates are inactive cases.

A Bulletin of the Health Department said that out of the latest deaths recorded in the state, Meerut had the highest number of deaths at 20, followed by 19 in Lucknow and 12 in Kanpur Nagar, 11 in Saharanpur and 10 in Agra.

On Monday, more than 2.79 lakh tests were conducted, Prasad said, with UP becoming the first state to conduct more than 4.50 crore tests with the latest addition.

The senior official said that with the ‘Village Monitoring Committees’ actively working in this direction, continuous work is being done to prevent the spread of the virus in rural areas.

Teams of the department have so far reached 89,512 villages and infection has been detected in 21,742 villages. Prasad claimed that about 68 per cent of the villages were found to be safe from the virus.

Prasad said that after reaching the peak on April 30 in the state, there has been a drop in cases in the last 18 days, while the positivity rate has also come down.
