Virginity Test of Brides In The Conservative Community: Social Groups Demand The End Of Abusive Practice

Mumbai: In a shocking incident, members of the Conservative community of Pune were asked about the results of the bride’s virginity test, from the newly married person in the video, on which the Maharashtra Superstition Nirmulan Samiti (MANS) urged to take action against them.

A delegation of MANS, an anti-superstition organization founded by late Narendra Dabholkar, met with social justice minister Rajkumar Badole of Maharashtra and demanded action.

An old ritual of the Kanjarbart community where the bride has to prove that she is a virgin on the night of marriage, along with progressive sections of the community, social workers are also being criticized.

The video showing members of the Conservative ‘Jat Panchayat’ (community representative body), in which the groom was asked the result of virginity test and whether he was “satisfied”, recently became viral on social media.

Nandini Jadhav, executive president of the MANS, said the groom, in this case, son of a former corporater has studied abroad while the bride to is an architect and daughter of a retired police officer.

“We met the minister who was in the city and demanded that the government take action on its own against this regressive practice,” she said.

“Badole promised that action will be taken, we will also approach the police tomorrow,” she added.

Although neither the groom nor the bride has objected to the custom, in this case, about 40 youths of the community have formed a group – ‘The V-Ritual’ – and a campaign on social media is practicing.
