Woman Sold At 16 & Raped By Man & His Father In Haryana, Escapes After 5 Years

Mumbai: A Chhattisgarh woman who was sold to a Haryana-based man by her cousin’s sister at 16, and raped and tortured by the man and his father, has escaped after five years, police said.

The woman was sold to the accused for ₹2 lakh. She was forced to marry him and repeatedly raped by him and his father over the years.

Meera, now a 21-year-old mother of a toddler, has returned to her hometown in Chhattisgarh’s Kabirdham district with her family. According to the Times of India, her maternal uncle’s daughter, who sold her for Rs 2 lakh, has been detained, but the father-son combo from Haryana’s Rohtak, who repeatedly raped her, has yet to be apprehended.

“Based on the survivor’s statement, an FIR was lodged for trafficking, rape, and criminal intimidation under IPC against her cousin and the two accused. Police have arrested the cousin and a team of cops will be sent to Haryana to nab the two others,” the report quoted Kabirdham SP Abhishek Pallava as saying.

Police claimed that because Meera was a minor at the time of the crime, additional provisions of the POCSO Act would be applied to all of the accused.

Meera, then 16, was looking for a job to help her family’s financial predicament in 2018 when her maternal uncle’s 32-year-old daughter, who was living in Madhya Pradesh at the time, told her about how she might work in Delhi and get paid handsomely.

Meera arrived in Delhi with her cousin in December 2018 and was initially assigned to work as a domestic helper at a doctor’s residence.

The difficult life and loneliness eventually shattered her resolve, and she told her cousin that she wanted to return home, Meera told the police, according to the TOI story.

Instead of returning Meera to her family, her relative sold her to a man in Rohtak.

Meera told police she had no idea she had been sold until she was in the hands of the man and forced to undergo wedding ceremonies at a temple.

The life of the trafficked lady became terrible from then on, as both the man and his father would rape her at any time of day, torture her, and force her to labor like a slave.

Meera chose to flee from them to avoid the torture. After her baby boy was born, she pretended to accept her life with the father-son combo and gradually persuaded them to let her communicate with her family members.
