Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Monday allowed senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad to visit Jammu and Kashmir but said he could not hold any political rally.

A bench of Justices SA Bobde and S Abdul Nazir had also told senior advocate AM Singhvi, who was appearing for Azad, that he wanted to meet the people and inquire about their welfare.

Singhvi said Azad tried to visit the state thrice but turned back from the airport.

Azad, who filed the petition in his personal capacity, on Sunday said it was “political”.

In his petition, Azad has also sought the apex court to meet his family members and relatives.

In his petition before the apex court, Azad has also sought permission to conduct an inquiry on social conditions following a clampdown by the authorities following the scrapping of the state’s special status
