Mumbai: VK Paul, member of NITI Aayog and Chairman of Empowered Group said on Friday that if lockdown had not to be implemented, the number of cases would be higher than they are at present.
Since the first lockdown implemented on 25 March to break the chain of transmissions of COVID19 has been successful in saving lives of thousands of people as per the projections made by several mathematical models, claimed the empowered group appointed by the centre.
VK Paul said that around 2.1 lakh lives have been saved due to the lockdown, while 36-71 lakh have been averted.
“The growth rate of #COVID19 cases has witnessed a steady fall from April 3, 2020, when the lockdown was able to put a brake on the speed of growth. The number of cases today would have been much higher had lockdown not been implemented,” he said.
A number of cases and growth rate of COVID19 deaths has fallen significantly due to lockdown, marking a notable difference between pre-lockdown and post-lockdown situations, Paul claimed.

He appreciated the country for achieving the milestone of providing 1 crore treatments under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.
