On United Nations 75th Anniversary, PM Narendra Modi To Virtually Address ECOSOC On July 17

Mumbai: On 17 July of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC) session on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver an almost keynote speech in this year’s high-level segment.

The Prime Minister will join his Norwegian counterpart Erna Solberg and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The high-level segment is organized by the ECOSOC every year and calls for a diverse group of high-level representatives from government, the private sector, civil society, and academics. 

The theme of the high-level section is “Multilateralism after COVID19: How we need it at the 75th anniversary of the United Nations”.

The event assumes special significance as it will be the first occasion in which Prime Minister Modi will address the broad membership of the United Nations since India’s comprehensive election as a non-permanent member of the Security Council on 17 June 2020 (for 2021-22). 

Prime Minister Modi had earlier delivered the keynote address on 22 January 2016 on the 70th anniversary of ECOSOC.

ECOSOC was established as one of the six major organs of the United Nations and is mandated to offer and undertake the direction of economic, social, and cultural activities of the United Nations, with responsibility for advancing international economic and social cooperation and development.

The first meeting of ECOSOC was called on 23 January 1946 in London, United Kingdom. India was the first president of ECOSOC in 1946. It is noteworthy that ECOSOC was inaugurated in 1946 by Sir Ramaswamy Mudaliar of India.
