Droupadi Murmu Gets Z+ Security Cover After NDA Declares Her As Presidential Candidate

Mumbai: After NDA announced former Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu as their Presidential candidate, the Centre has provided round-the-clock Z+ category security cover for her by the armed Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

According to a PTI report, the armed squad took over the security of 64-year-old Murmu in the early hours of Wednesday. After the announcement of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), there was a flood of congratulatory messages from leaders for Murmu.

“I am surprised as well as delighted. As a tribal woman from remote Mayurbhanj district, I had not thought about becoming the candidate for the top post,” Murmu told reporters at her Rairangpur residence.

He said the NDA government has now proved the BJP’s slogan of ‘Sab Ka Saath, Sab Ka Vishwas’ by selecting a tribal woman for the top post.

She is the first woman and tribal leader of Odisha to be appointed governor in an Indian state. If elected, Murmu will be India’s first tribal president and second woman president. Presidential elections are to be held on 18 July.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the 64-year-old politician and tweeted, “Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji has devoted her life to serving society and empowering the poor, the downtrodden as well as the marginalised. She has rich administrative experience and had an outstanding gubernatorial tenure.”

He further added that the former Jharkhand governor’s understanding of policy matters and compassionate nature will greatly benefit the country. Other leaders also hailed the NDA’s decision and extended wishes to Draupadi Murmu for the presidential nomination.

If elected, Murmu will become the first person from Odisha and the first tribal woman to hold the top constitutional post. Murmu is also a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Since its formation in the year 2000, she is the first Governor of Jharkhand to serve a five-year term.

Murmu was a BJP minister in the Naveen Patnaik-led Odisha cabinet when the Biju Janata Dal ruled the state with the support of the saffron party.

On the other hand, the Opposition party Congress had announced Yashwant Sinha as its joint candidate for the post.
