Mumbai: In another relief to citizens of Delhi the air quality has been improved on the morning of January 9 with the overall air quality index (AQI) at 211.

According to the Air Quality Monitoring System Air Quality and Weather Forecasting of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the pollutant particles on Thursday put Delhi’s air at 136 and PM2.5 as 94 with the concentrations of PM10 as ‘bad’ (SAFAR).

Experts advise sensitive groups to reduce long or heavy labour. In addition, asthma patients are asked to keep medicines ready when there are symptoms of cough or difficulty in breathing during the day. Heart patients have also been asked to see a doctor if they experience palpitation, shortness of breath, or unusual fatigue.

While the pollution level in the Chandni Chowk area was pegged at 273 with a high concentration of PM 2.5, the same was 265 for Mathura Road, 266 for Dhirpur, 245 for Delhi University and 162 for Pusa. Meanwhile, Noida in Uttar Pradesh also saw high concentrations of PM2.5 at 300 when an AQI of 200 was recorded at Gurugram in Haryana.

No quick drop in AQI is expected by the weekend in favourable weather conditions in the National Capital Region, with air quality monitoring also projected.

Precipitation with induced cyclonic circulation and western disturbances is further contributing to the improvement in overall AQI. For January 10, the SAFAR model suggests a slight drop in air quality but the AQI is expected to remain in the ‘bad’ category. For Friday, the top three air pollution hotspots in Delhi-NCR are expected to be Vasundhara, Sahibabad and Adarsh Nagar.
