Bharat Is About Our Traditions, Culture, Past & Future: Jaishankar
Mumbai: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, “When we speak about Bharat, this is what Bharat is. Bharat is about our traditions, our culture, our past, and our future.”
The Union Minister was addressing during the opening of the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, a program designed to support those who work as artisans, craftsmen, and other members of the traditional workforce.
Jaishankar stated at the occasion that traditional abilities and skills in many countries have been lost over time as a result of globalization, industrialization, people losing their traditions, and the same not being handed on to the next generation.
The same should not occur to India, one of the oldest civilizations, whose identity is derived from the customs and culture of its inhabitants that have been passed down through thousands of years.
“Today we have gathered here to strengthen the identity, heritage, and culture of India to make sure what we have received over thousands of years is passed on for thousands of more years. So when we speak about Bharat, this is what Bharat is. Bharat is about our traditions, our culture, our past and our future,” he said.
The statement has relevance in light of the national discussion around the BJP-led Center’s claimed effort to rename India as Bharat.

Jaishankar referred to the community of artisans and craftsmen as “Vishwakarma,” and claimed that by their innovation, ideas, and labor, it is they “who leave the imprint of our culture in our history.”
“That is of enormous value.”
The Union Minister added that the program would provide artisans and craftsmen with the tools and resources, including access to credit, to enhance their equipment and capabilities, sell their wares, and acquire the know-how to help the nation and the rest of the world recognize the talent, ability, and creativity that the people of India possess.
According to Jaishankar, an exhibition of jewelry, statues, utensils, fabrics, and writings created by Indian artisans and craftsmen over thousands of years was organized in conjunction with the G20 summit in the nation’s capital.
“Vishwakarma” was at the center of programs like “Make in India,” “Vocal for Local,” and “One District, one product,” in addition to fostering travel and assisting start-up and skill development in India.
Therefore, he continued, when individuals and businesses from around the world come to India, the first thing that should be done is to help those who are already there and produce the proper goods that have been created in the nation for a very long time.
The ‘Vishwakarma’ scheme, with a budget of Rs 13,000 crore, is also considered the ruling BJP’s outreach to the politically significant section because those who practice these traditional occupations are disproportionately from Other Backward Classes.
