Cabinet Approves Atal Bhujal Yojana
The funding pattern is 50:50 between the government of India and the World Bank
Mumbai: In another development, the Union Cabinet has approved the Atal Bhujal Yojana (ATAL JAL) with a total value of Rs 6000 crore a day before the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister and BJP veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar made the announcements in the national capital after waiting for the cabinet meeting.

The Government of India said in a statement on 12 December that the World Bank has given its approval for the Atal Bhujalya Scheme, a Rs 6,000 crore central sector scheme for sustainable management of groundwater resources with community participation.
The funding pattern is 50:50 between the government of India and the World Bank.
“The plan envisages the active participation of communities in various activities such as the formation of water user associations, monitoring, and dissemination of groundwater data, water budget, Gram Panchayat-wise water security schemes and preparation of information, education and communication (IEC) activities related to sustainable groundwater management.”

The government further stated that the highly-exploited and water-stressed areas identified for implementation of the scheme are mainly the states of Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
States were selected based on a number of criteria, including the degree of groundwater exploitation and degradation, established legal and regulatory tools, institutional readiness, and experience in implementing initiatives related to groundwater management.
