CDS Chopper Crash: Lone Survivor IAF Group Captain On Life Support, Says Rajnath Singh

Mumbai: In his statement in the Lok Sabha, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday informed that Indian Air Force Group Captain Varun Singh, a survivor of a military helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu, is on life support at the Military Hospital in Wellington.

“Group Captain Varun Singh is on life support at Military Hospital, Wellington. All efforts are being made to save his life,” the Defense Minister said.

According to sources, the Shaurya Chakra awardee’s health condition is critical but stable and may be shifted from Military Hospital, Wellington to Command Hospital, Bengaluru.

The Group Captain was recently awarded the Shaurya Chakra for an act of exceptional gallantry by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Meanwhile, the bodies of those killed in the military helicopter crash on Wednesday were brought to the Madras Regimental Center from the Military Hospital at Wellington in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district.

In this accident, 13 people including Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat and his wife Madhulika Rawat died. General Rawat was on his way from Sulur to Wellington when his helicopter crashed near Coonoor.

India’s first CDS General Rawat was on a visit to the Defense Services Staff College in Wellington when his helicopter crashed. The Indian Air Force has ordered an inquiry into the accident.

General Rawat was appointed as India’s first Chief of Defense Staff on December 31, 2019. He had earlier served as the Chief of Army Staff from January 2017 to December 2019. He was inducted into the Indian Army in December 1978.
