Chandrayaan-3 To Take Off Between July 12 And 19: ISRO Chairman

Mumbai: ISRO Chairman S Somanath on Monday stated that Chandrayaan-3, India’s third Moon mission, will be launched between July 12 and 19 if all tests go smoothly.

Somanath told the media that the Chandrayaan has already arrived at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, from the U R Rao Satellite Centre after opening a one-day workshop and space exhibition there organized by ISRO. “The final preparations are going on. It will be completed by the end of this month. At the same time, the rocket, LVM-3, is going to be used for this launch. Its assembly is going on. All parts for its assembly have reached Sriharikota,” Somanath said.

According to him by the end of this month, the rocket assembly will also be finished. After that, Chandrayaan-3 will be integrated with the rocket. That will also be completed in the final week of June, he said, and numerous testing will follow.

“We can only launch it between the period of July 12 to July 19 there is a window for launch. Although we would lose gasoline, we can still do it later, Somanath added.

He added that the launch will only go ahead during this window if all the tests were successful.

He said that changes have been made to Chandrayaan-3’s hardware, structure, computers, software, and sensors in order to avoid any issues during the approaching launch.

The landing legs have been strengthened more, and more fuel has been added. Large solar panels have been upgraded to produce more energy. There is also an additional sensor installed.

“To measure its speed, a ‘Laser Doppler VelociMeter’ instrument, which was developed in the last year, has been added. We have also changed its algorithm and new software has been added to help Chandrayaan to land in another area if there is any failure at the scheduled spot,” the ISRO chief said.
