Cyclone Biparjoy May Cause Extensive Damage; Gujarat’s Kutch, Jamnagar Likely To Be Most Impacted: IMD

Mumbai: The Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar districts of Gujarat are projected to be the most affected by Cyclone “Biparjoy,” according to the India Meteorological Department.

On the evening of June 15, Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to cross the beaches of Saurashtra and Kutch close to Jakhau Port as a “very severe cyclonic storm” with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125–135 kmph and gusts to 150 kmph.

At a press conference, IMD director Mrutyunjay Mohapatra noticed, “It’s damaging potential could be extensive.”

On June 15, the storm may cause remote areas in the Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar districts to see particularly high rainfall (above 20 cm). “These regions often don’t get as much rain. As a consequence, it may cause flooding in low-lying locations,” he stated.

Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi, and Junagarh may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Winds gusting up to 145 kilometers are predicted to batter these districts.

“Tidal waves reaching heights of up to six meters could inundate low-lying coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch. Evacuation measures have been recommended, and authorities are taking prompt action,” Mohapatra said.

According to the weather department, the cyclone has been moving northwards at a speed of five kilometers per hour, and is centered approximately 290 km southwest of Gujarat’s Porbandar.

The Western Railways has cancelled 67 trains passing through the areas predicted to be affected by weather conditions due to Cyclone Biparjoy. The passengers hit by cancellations will be eligible for refunds as per the existing rules.

“Various safety and security precautions are also being taken by Western Railway for train passengers of these prone areas under the jurisdiction,” the zonal office of Indian Railways said.
