Cong Stages Overnight Protest In K’taka Assembly Over Minister’s Saffron flag Remark

Mumbai: Congress MLAs on Thursday staged an overnight protest in Karnataka Assembly, demanding minister KS Eshwarappa’s resignation over his remarks suggesting the saffron flag may become the national flag in future.

The controversy started when Eshwarappa suggested that the saffron flag could become the national flag of India in future and that it would one day be hoisted at the Red Fort.

“Not today but someday in the future maybe 100, 200, or 500 years later, the saffron flag may become the national flag. People used to laugh over the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Are we not building the temple now? Now Hindutva is being discussed in the country,” he had said on Wednesday.

The Congress party strongly opposed his comments and started a protest carrying the national flag in the assembly and demanded his resignation.

Following the protest, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai defended his minister’s comments and criticized Congress leaders for “violating” the flag code in the assembly.

He said, “They have used the national flag in the Well of the House. There is a flag code on how it is used. We have to use the national flag with respect. Congress has violated the flag code. People are watching it. Congress failed to act as a responsible Opposition party,” Bommai told media.
