Congress Leader Jitin Prasada Joins BJP In Presence Of Piyush Goyal In Delhi

Mumbai: Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Jitin Prasada joined BJP in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal at the party headquarters in Delhi on Wednesday.

Prasad, a big Brahmin name, joined the BJP ahead of the crucial Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. A two-time MP, Prasad is a youth leader who has been a close aide of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

Giving him the membership slip, Piyush Goyal said, “Jitin Prasada has spent his life working for UP. He was just 27 when his father passed away and he was working in Mumbai at such a young age. He went to various districts of UP and worked for the people of UP.”

After joining BJP, Prasada said that “I have a three-generation connection with Congress, so I took this important decision after a lot of deliberation. In the last 8-10 years I have felt that if there is one party that is truly national, it is BJP. Other parties are regional but this is a national party.”

“If there is any political party or a leader standing for the interests of the nation today, given the situation that our country is going through, it is BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he added.

Prasad started his career as the General Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004. He was also a minister in the UPA government at the Centre.

The development is being seen as a major setback for the Congress party, which had suffered a massive defeat in the recently concluded assembly elections in five states/union territories.
