Congress Maliciously Targeting President: Irani On Adhir’s ‘Rashtrapatni’ Remark

Mumbai: Union Minister Smriti Irani criticised Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s ‘Rashtrapatni’ remark for President Droupadi Murmu by saying that his remark humiliates the dignity of that highest constitutional post.

A video of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in Lok Sabha has surfaced in which he is seen calling President Draupadi Murmu as ‘President’. However, he later termed it a ‘mistake’.

Addressing a press conference, Irani said, “Ever since Draupadi Murmu’s name was announced as the Presidential candidate of India, she has been maliciously targeted by the Congress party. Congressmen have called her a puppet and a symbol of evils as the candidate, and the attacks do not seem to stop against her even after she has now been elected to the highest Constitutional office of the country.”

Irani said, “A tribal woman from a poor family who has created history in our country is constantly being let down by the Congress party.”

He further attacked the opposition leader saying that he is aware that this manner of addressing the President of India is not only of his constitutional position but also represents the rich tribal heritage in our country.

“The Congressmen knew that to demean the President in this way was to undermine the potential of women in our country, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and the poor, who rise above the ranks through hard work,” he said.

Irani asked for an apology from Congress for Chowdhury’s remark on the President.

“Under Sonia Gandhi’s leadership, Congressmen continue to demean the women in constitutional posts. The Congress party for demeaning the first tribal President of our country needs to apologise in Parliament and on the streets of India. The apology is due not only to the President of India but every citizen of India who is duly represented by Droupadi Murmu in office,” she concluded.
