Congress To Oppose Triple Talaq Bill In Lok Sabha Today, Says ‘Criminality Clause Can be Misused’

Mumbai: Triple Talaq Bill to be tabled today in Lok Sabha whereas Congress has decided to oppose the contentious Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage), Bill.

Congress leader and Member of Parliament Suresh said that the party will oppose the criminal section because it can be misused by the police and the government.

“Last night, they put Triple Talaq Bill in today’s agenda, and without the  knowledge of protest, the National Medical Commission Bill and DNA Technology (Usage and Application) Regulation Bill has been postponed. Why are they keeping it secret and at night the agenda Are you keeping it in? “Asked Suresh.

Earlier, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said that the government is committed to banning the practice of triple talc and will present the bill again in Parliament.

The bill aims to declare the practice of triple talaq as illegal and provides for payment of subsistence allowance to Muslim women and dependent children.

The triple talaq bill, which made the practice of instant triple talaq (talaq-e-bidat) a penal offense, was vehemently opposed by the opposition parties as they claimed that the jail term for the husband to divorcing his wife is legally untenable.
