Woman Who Got Stuck Between Platform And Train ‘Rescued’, Four Express Trains Delayed

Mumbai: A 49-year-old woman who fell between a platform at Madurai Railway Junction and a train coach was rescued on Wednesday morning. As the rescue operation took a little more than an hour delayed four express trains at the station.

Vijaya Poornima (49), a resident of town Hall rad in Madurai, was returning from Chennai in S12 coach of Chennai- Thiruvananthapuram Ananthapuri Express with her two sons- Vijay Akash (19) and Aswin Ram (7). The train reached platform No 1 at 4:49 am with a five-minute break.

Poornima and her children, who were sleeping, realized that the train had arrived at the station and was about to depart. Her son’s first got down. The train moved by the time the woman tried to get down. She stumbled and fell between the train and the platform. Her son’s started shouting meanwhile the other passengers raised the alarm and the train stopped. The Railway officials, the Government Railway Police, the Railway Protection Force and passengers began the rescue operation immediately.

She could not be lifted as her leg was stuck between the metal pipe to the bio-toilet. In order to release her leg, the pipe was cut in two places using a power hydraulic combi tool. The woman who was rescued by 6:07 am, was rushed to a private hospital. Officials said she was out of danger.

As many as four trains- Ananthapuri Express, Pothigai Express, Pandian Express and Howrah Kanyakumari Express were delayed by one to two hours due to the rescue operation.
