Cyclone Jawad Likely To Make Landfall Near Odisha’s Puri On Dec 5: IMD

Mumbai: A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm Jawad, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra told in a media briefing that the current wind speed of the cyclonic storm, at present, is about 420 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam, gusting to 80 kmph, 60-70 kmph.

Mohapatra said Cyclone Jawad is moving north-northwestwards and is expected to change course and make landfall near Puri in Odisha on Sunday afternoon. By Saturday morning, Cyclone Jawad is likely to reach the west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coast, the region which is expected to see the maximum impact.

The IMD has suggested a complete suspension of fishing operations and urged people in the affected areas to stay indoors. The Meteorological Department said that there should be regular traffic in the cyclone area and movement should be restricted.

Heavy rain and strong wind warnings have been issued for the Gangetic plains of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and South Coastal Odisha from Friday evening as Cyclone Jawad moves towards the coast. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over North Coast Andhra Pradesh including Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram.

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall (more than 20 cm) at some places in Gajapati, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha on Saturday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over North Coastal Odisha on Sunday.

Cyclone Jawad may also bring heavy rains at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura from December 5-6.

Atul Karwal, director-general of the National Disaster Response Force, said that a total of 46 NDRF teams have been prepositioned in Odisha, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. He added that the Cabinet secretary will hold a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee at 4 pm today to review the situation.
