Dera Sacha Sauda’s Gurmeet Ram Rahim Jailed For Life For Murder; Fined ₹31 Lakh

Mumbai: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim has been sentenced to life imprisonment with four others in the case of the murder of his former manager Ranjit Singh.

The special CBI court in Panchkula sentenced all the accused, including Singh and four others. A fine of Rs 31 lakh has also been imposed on Singh and Rs 50,000 each on the rest of the accused.

Before the sentencing, the Dera chief had requested the court to show leniency. In his petition, Singh had mentioned the philanthropic work he had done in the past. The controversial cleric is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for raping two female followers. Not only this, Singh is also serving a life sentence for the murder of journalist Ramchandra Chhatrapati.

Ranjit Singh, a resident of Khanpur Kolian village in Kurukshetra, was shot dead on 10 July 2002. He was a follower of the Dera, but he had harassed Singh, leading to a rift between the two. A case of murder has been registered in the Sadar police station of Thanesar in Kurukshetra. The CBI took over the investigation in 2003 and filed a charge sheet in July 2007.

On October 8, 2021, a CBI court convicted Singh and four others – Sabdil Singh, Krishan Lal, Avtar Singh and Jasbir Singh – in this case.
