DRDO Developing Indigenous Counter-Drone Technology: Amit Shah

Mumbai: Defense Research and Development Organization and other agencies are working on indigenous counter-drone technology, and it will be available soon, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on Saturday and added that all gaps in India’s border fencing will be covered by 2022.

The remarks come two weeks after a drone was used to target an Indian Air Force (IAF) base in Jammu with explosives on June 27. Two injured jawans were injured in the explosives. Since then, drones have been repeatedly seen hovering over military installations in the area.

“Smuggling of drugs, weapons and explosives through tunnels and drones is a major challenge. Today it is very important for us to tackle these challenges as soon as possible. I am confident that we will soon increase our presence on the borders with indigenous (made in India) anti-drone technology,” Shah said at an adornment ceremony of the Border Security Force (BSF).

The June 27 attack on the Indian Air Force Station was the first such instance of Pakistan-based terrorists deploying unmanned aerial vehicles to strike critical installations in India. The National Investigation Agency is probing the matter.

There have been several incidents of the use of drones by terrorists to drop arms, ammunition, drugs and money in the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir to promote terrorism in the region. At least 300 drones have been sighted on the border with Pakistan since 2019.

On Friday, four drones were sighted at different places in Samba and Jammu.

NSG has deployed an anti-drone system in Jammu after the drone attack. Along with this, the IAF has also taken measures to prevent any such attack in Jammu and other important airbases across the country.

According to news agency ANI, Srinagar, Kupwara, Rajouri and Baramulla have banned the storage, sale, possession, use and transportation of drones and other similar unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
