Mumbai: Punjab’s former Forest Minister and Congress leader, Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, was arrested by Vigilance Bureau (VB) in a corruption case.

A local journalist Kamaljit Singh, who was allegedly working with him as an aide, has also been arrested.

The Vigilance Bureau last week arrested a Forest Officer (DFO) of Mohali’s Forest Division on charges of corruption, revealing to the state agency how Dharamsot was bribed before cutting down a single tree.

During the previous Congress government led by Captain Amarinder Singh in Punjab, an IAS officer had accused Dharamsot of a scam of Rs 23 crore. He has been booked under the charges of the Prevention of Corruption Act for misdeeds as a minister.

Dharamsot had served as the Minister of Forest and Social Welfare Department in the Amarinder Singh government.

The development comes more than a month after the Punjab government warned of action against the Congress leader. Before coming to power, AAP had on several occasions demanded Dharamsot’s arrest in connection with the alleged post-matric scholarship scheme scam.

During the regime of former CM Amarinder Singh, the then Administrative Secretary of the Social Justice Department, Kripa Shankar Saroj had alleged that a scam of Rs 63.91 crore had come to the fore in the Centre’s scheme.

He had said that records relating to Rs 39 crore were missing, and an amount of Rs 16.91 crore was given to those institutions against whom the audit team had recommended recovery of Rs 8 crore, leading to an expenditure of Rs 24.91 crore on the state exchequer.
