Farmers End Protest After Over A Year; Will Start Vacating Delhi Border From Saturday

Mumbai: Farmers have ended their protest against the farm laws, which have now been repealed, after over a year as the government agreed to their demands. Farmers will start vacating the Delhi border on Saturday.

“We are preparing to leave for our homes, but the final decision will be taken by Samyukt Kisan Morcha,” a farmer said.

Farmers have been protesting the three laws at various border points outside Delhi since November 26 last year and announced today that they would vacate the sites from December 11.

The protesting farmers have received a letter from the central government, promising to form a committee on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and withdraw the case against them with immediate effect.

“As far as the matter of compensation is concerned, UP and Haryana have given in-principle consent,” the statement said.

Addressing a press conference, farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni said, “We have decided to suspend our agitation. We will hold a review meeting on January 15. If the government does not fulfil its promises, we could resume our agitation.”

“Protesting farmers will vacate the protest sites on December 11,” Darshan Pal Singh, another prominent farmers’ leader, said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on November 19 announced that the BJP-led Centre would pass necessary Bills during the Winter Session of the Parliament to repeal the laws.
