Gathering Of Five Or More People Banned In Mumbai Till Jan 7 Amid Rising COVID Cases

Mumbai: Section 144 has been imposed in Mumbai starting from December 30 till January 7, 2022, in view of rising COVID-19 cases including Omicron cases.

The development comes after Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray held a meeting with BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar and other health officials. Also Read: Biggest One-Day Jump In Omicron Cases In India As Tally Reaches 961

Appealing to the people not to panic, Thackeray, who is also the guardian minister of Mumbai’s suburban district, urged everyone to exercise extreme caution in view of the sharp rise in coronavirus cases in Mumbai and stressed on vaccination and widespread use of face masks. Also Read: India Reports 13,154 New COVID-19 Cases In 24 Hours, 43% Higher Than Yesterday

All public places in the city will remain closed on December 31 and strict action will be taken against those violating the COVID-19 guidelines during the New Year celebrations.

Establishments violating norms will be sealed for the next few months.

The number of people detected with the Omicron variant in Mumbai reached 118 on Wednesday, while 2,510 new COVID-19 cases and one death were reported in the last 24 hours.

Besides Mumbai, Delhi and Gujarat also recorded a big spike in fresh COVID-19 cases – their highest since the May-June period – while Punjab reported the first case of the Omicron variant taking the country-wide tally of the new strain past 900, reported PTI.
