Godavari-Banakacherla interlinking project: Andhra Govt Plans To Construct Capacity Balancing Reservoir In Guntur District

Mumbai: The Godavari Banakacherla Interlinking Project is intended to divert about 23,000 Cusecs which is equal to 2 TMC per day of Godavari Water from Polavaram dam in 105 Days and drop into Banakacharla Head Regulator. State government aimed to divert Godavari water to Banakacherla regulator with an estimated cost of Rs 60,000 crore.

“By this, lakhs of acres will be benefitted, drinking and irrigation water will be supplied to drought areas. The Chief Minister instructed the officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the same. The Chief Minister’s desire is to make use of every drop that is being wasted in the ocean,” the statement said.

The Project will serve the purpose of stabilization of NSRJ Right Main Canal ayacut of estimated 9.61 Lakh Acres. It will create irrigation potential for new ayacut of about 2 lakh acres under NSP Phase- II in Darsi and Kanigiri constituencies of Prakasam district. It will help in the formation of a balancing reservoir at Bollapalli village and Mandal in Guntur District with a capacity of 150 TMC by lifting water at chainage KM 114.500 of Nagarjuna Sagar Right Canal basin.

“The project will irrigate two lakh acres in Kanigiri of Prakasam district. Moreover, the idea is to meet the drinking water requirement for Guntur and Prakasam districts,” he added.   

Around2,100 MW electricity will be required. water from Banakacherla regulator can be supplied to Veligonda, KC Canal, Telugu Ganga Project, SRBC and other projects.
