“Many people refused the pension. But some are still poor who lost jobs after being arrested for no fault of theirs,” he said.

Earlier, answering a question from NCP member Ajit Pawar, Minister of Relief and Rehabilitation Madan Yerar said that 3,267 applications for a pension have so far been approved.

Out of these, 1,179 applications were approved on the basis of stamp paper of Rs 100 so that it can be proved that the applicant was sentenced to jail during the emergency.

Meanwhile, Fadnavis dismissed the demand for an increase in the pension amount, said, if needed, it will be considered in the future. But, he agreed with a pension for a citation.

According to the government’s decision, those who were kept in jail for one month will be given a monthly pension of Rs 5,000 and for those who are in jail for more period, they will be given Rs 10,000 per month.

The emergency was imposed in India from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi.
