Govt Urges SC To Urgently Schedule EWS Quota Hearing In NEET PG Admissions Case

Mumbai: The central government on Monday requested Supreme Court to schedule a hearing in a matter related to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota in connection with the NEET PG admissions on Tuesday, citing “some urgency”.

Citing “some urgency” the Centre urged on Tuesday to the Supreme Court to schedule a hearing of EWS quota matter related to NEET-PG admissions.

Responding to the Centre’s request, Justice DY Chandrachud said he will consult CJI NV Ramana to hear the matter tomorrow or the day after. A Supreme Court bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud said the EWS quota issue is a three-judge matter and the CJI will request NV Ramana for the list of cases.

“The moment today’s work gets over, I would make a request to CJI NV Ramana for the listing of the case,” Justice Chandrachud said, according to a PTI report.

The matter at present is listed for hearing on January 6.

On Sunday, the central government submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that it has asked a three-member panel to maintain the current gross annual family income limit of Rs 8 lakh or less for candidates belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS).

R Subrahmanyam, Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, who filed the affidavit on behalf of the Centre, told the apex court, “I respectfully submit that the Central Government has decided to accept the recommendations of the Committee along with its recommendations for implementation.”

The government had on November 30 last year constituted a committee to assure the apex court that it would reconsider the criteria for determining the economically weaker sections. The committee included former finance secretary Ajay Bhushan, ICSSR member secretary VK Malhotra and the Centre’s principal economic advisor Sanjeev Sanyal.

There have been massive protests by resident doctors of various hospitals under the banner of the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) in Delhi and other parts of the country over the delay in NEET-PG counseling which has been postponed. The Central Government will make a decision on revisiting the criteria for fixing the EWS quota.
