Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani Arrested By Assam Police: Congress

Mumbai: Gujarat’s Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani was arrested by Assam Police on Wednesday from the Palanpur Circuit House, Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee chief Jagdish Thakor said. “Police took Mevani to Assam by train from Ahmedabad at 4 am,” he added.

As per reports, the arrest was made for two of his tweets that allegedly “pose a threat to disturb tranquillity”.

The complaint, filed at Kokrajhar Police Station, states that Mevani, in one of his tweets, had said, “PM Modi worships Godse” and “…that the PM on his Gujarat visit must make an appeal for harmony in light of the recent events of communal violence in the state”.

The tweet has “caused widespread criticism and has a tendency to disturb the peace, as opposed to maintaining harmony among a certain section of people. It encourages one section of the public belonging to a certain community to commit crimes against another community.”

“The tweet…is sure to promote enmity or hatred towards different communities,” the complaint added.

Last year, Mevani, who supported the Congress, was apprehended from Palanpur Circuit House around 11.30 pm.

According to news agency ANI, IPC sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 153 (A) (promoting enmity between two communities), 295 (A) (intentional and malicious intent to hurt religious feelings) against the leader. An FIR has been registered under heinous feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and various sections of the IT Act.

Further, the two tweets in question have been withheld by Twitter in response to a legal demand.
