Hanuman Chalisa Row: MP Navneet Rana Released From Byculla Jail, Taken To Lilavati Hospital

Mumbai: Independent MP Navneet Rana was released from Byculla jail on Thursday afternoon and was taken to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai for a medical checkup.

The legal process of giving bail amount of Rs 50,000 each to the Rana couple has been completed in the court. A team of lawyers of the Rana couple from Borivali court left for Taloja jail for the release of Ravi Rana and another team left for Byculla jail where Navneet Rana was lodged.

Navneet Rana’s lawyer had placed a copy of his release order in a bailing box kept outside Byculla jail. Navneet Rana and Ravi Rana, who was granted bail on Wednesday morning, were not released from jail yesterday as their release orders could not be received from the magistrate concerned in due time.

The MP-MLA couple was arrested on April 23 from their Mumbai residence after they announced that they would recite Hanuman Chalisa outside Uddhav Thackeray’s house in Bandra. Navneet Rana, arrested on charges of sedition and promoting enmity, was on Wednesday shifted from Byculla Jail to JJ Hospital for treatment of spondylosis.

Later in the evening, he was taken back to jail. Rana’s lawyer informed them about his health and on Monday wrote a letter to the Byculla jail superintendent saying that he has spondylosis which is increasing due to continuous sitting in the jail and lying on the floor.

He said that Rana would have to undergo a CT scan so that the doctors could understand the gravity of his condition, adding that the jail authorities refused permission for the same.

Two FIRs were registered against the couple on charges of sedition, promoting enmity and assaulting a public servant to prevent the discharge of duty.
