Jaishankar Praises Op Ganga, Says Evacuation From Sumy Was Challenging

Mumbai: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday praised the authorities for the smooth implementation of Operation Ganga. He, however, said the evacuation of Indians from Sumy was particularly challenging.

” Sumy students are returning to India today. Their evacuation was particularly challenging,” Jaishankar said in a statement.

The External Affairs Minister also thanked all those who helped in the smooth conduct of Operation Ganga. Operation Ganga, which was launched on the instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has happened because of both leadership and commitment,” Jaishankar said.

He said, “We are grateful to all those who fulfilled its (Operation Ganga) objectives. Our special gratitude to the authorities of Ukraine and Russia, as well as to the Red Cross for the evacuation assistance.”

“Ukraine’s neighbours – Romania, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Moldova – have given us extraordinary support. I thank them wholeheartedly,” he said.

“We are grateful to NGOs, individual volunteers, corporates, our airlines and the Indian Air Force who worked so tirelessly in this exercise,” the minister said.

The External Affairs Minister invited his cabinet colleagues Jyotiraditya Scindia, Kiren Rijiju, Hardeep Singh Puri and V.K. Thanks to Singh for his presence on the ground in neighbouring countries of Ukraine.

He commended the personnel of the Indian Embassy in Ukraine and the Ministry of External Affairs for their dedicated efforts in the face of a difficult conflict. India has evacuated over 20,000 of its civilians from war-torn Ukraine under Operation Ganga.

Earlier today, more flights carrying many Indian students from the City of Sumy in North-Eastern Ukraine landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
