K’taka-By-Polls: BJP Leads On 9, Cong-JDS On 2 Seats Each, Counting Underway
Mumbai: The counting of votes for the Karnataka assembly by-election is on, with early trends suggesting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was leading in nine seats.
BJP candidates are leading from the Athani, Kagwad, Gokak, Yellapur, Hirekerur, Ranibennurm Vijayanagara, Chikkaballapur and the Mahalakshmi Layout seats.
On the other hand, Congress candidates are leading in Hunasuru and Shivajinagar constituencies, while two candidates of Janata Dal-Secular led in Yashwantpura and Krishnarajapate seats.
In the early stages of counting, an independent candidate from Hoskote seat Sharath Kumar Bachegowda is also leading.
The results of these by-elections will decide the fate of the four-month-old BS Yeddyurappa-led BJP government in Karnataka. The counting of votes started at 8 am today and the results are expected to be declared by this afternoon.
Elections were held for the 15 assembly seats vacated after the MLAs resigned in July, breaking the Congress-JDS alliance and paving the way for the BJP to come to power.
