Lockdown In Mumbai If Daily COVID-19 Cases Cross 20,000-Mark: Mayor

Mumbai: Amid rising cases of COVID-19, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar on Tuesday said lockdown will have to be imposed in the city if daily cases cross the 20,000-mark.

The mayor said if the daily COVID-19 cases in Mumbai cross the 20,000-mark, then the need for a lockdown will arise.

“We will have to impose a lockdown in Mumbai if daily COVID cases cross the 20,000-mark,” Pednekar said.

According to the mayor, 20,000 cases a day in Mumbai will make the government think of changing the COVID-19 guidelines.

Pednekar said that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is likely to speak about the situation of Covid-19 in the state in the next two to three days.

The mayor further warned that a mini-lockdown could also be imposed in Mumbai if people continued to crowd public places like cinemas, gardens, and markets, which could lead to overcrowding.

The comments come a day after Mumbai city reported 8,082 COVID-19 cases, the highest daily spike since April 18, 2021. There were also two deaths on Monday.

Of the new cases, 40 were of Omicron variants, which is a matter of worldwide concern. Mumbai now has a total of 368 omicron type cases.

Mumbai’s coronavirus tally now stands at 8,07,602, while the death toll has jumped to 16,379, according to a bulletin issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
