Lt Gen Manoj Pande Appointed Indian Army Chief, 1st Engineer To Hold The Post

Mumbai: Lieutenant General Manoj Pande was on Monday appointed as the new chief of the Indian Army. He’s the first engineer to hold the post.

Pande, who was appointed Vice Chief of the Army Staff in February 2022, will succeed General MM Naravane as Ar The appointment of Lt Gen Pandey as the next Army Chief comes ahead of the scheduled retirement of current Army Chief General MM Naravane on April 30 by the end of this month.

Lt Gen Pande will take over as the Indian Army Chief on May 1.

Lt Gen Pande senior-mostnior officer in the Indian Army after General Naravane. He will be the 29th Chief of the Army Staff.

In February this year, Lt Gen Pande took over as the Deputy Chief of the Indian Army in place of Lt Gen CP Mohanty.

Lt Gen Pande served as the Eastern Army Commander before being promoted as the Vice Chief of the Indian Army. He had commanded the Andaman and Nicobar Command before taking over as the Eastern Command.

“The government has decided to appoint Lt Gen Manoj Pande as the next Chief of Army Staff,” defence officials were quoted as saying by ANI.

Lt Gen Pande is an alumnus of the National Defense Academy and was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in December 1982.

The appointment comes amid speculation that General Naravane may be named as the next Chief of Defense Staff.

The post of CDS was lying vacant in December last year after General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 12 armed forces personnel were killed in a helicopter crash on December 8.

Gen Naravane has been the Chief of the Army Staff for 28 months and it was under his leadership that the Indian Army successfully contained the threat from China at several friction points in eastern Ladakh.
