Mumbai: Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has asked CM Eknath Shinde to prove a majority in Assembly on July 4 (Monday). A special session of the Maharashtra Assembly is scheduled to be held on July 3 and 4.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led government fell when Shinde broke ties with 39 Sena MLAs, pushing the MVA to a minority. Shinde also had the support of independent candidates, 50 in total. When rebel Shiv Sena leaders revolted against the then CM, they said that they want Uddhav Thackeray to break the alliance with Congress and NCP and join hands with BJP.

However, Thackeray remained adamant about the alliance and resigned from the post of CM. A day after demitting office on Wednesday, Shinde formed the government with the BJP, which has 106 MLAs in the house. A party or alliance needs 145 MLAs to prove a majority in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly.

NCP has 53 MLAs and Congress has 44 opposition MLAs. AIMIM and Samajwadi Party have two seats each. Raj Thackeray, who is supporting the BJP-Shinde government, has an MLA in the house of MNS.

Shiv Sena MLA Deepak Kesarkar today said despite having 106 MLAs, the BJP took the decision of making Eknath Shinde the CM. “It means they have shown large-heartedness,” he said.

The Sena MLA also said that Devendra Fadvanis in the cabinet will be a boost as it will be a help to get clearances from Delhi.
