Maharashtra Polls: Shiv Sena-BJP Seat Sharing Tougher Than India-Pakistan Partition, Says Sanjay Raut

Mumbai: The Maharashtra election is scheduled to be held on October 21, but the seat-sharing arrangement between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena has not yet been finalized. Both parties want to contest more and more seats, so the seat-sharing formula is yet to be agreed.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut while speaking on the issues of seat-sharing arrangement said that this division is more terrible than the partition of India and Pakistan.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said, “Maharashtra is very big. This division of 288 seats is more difficult than the partition of India and Pakistan.”

Sanjay Raut said, “If we were in opposition rather than in government, the picture would have been different. He said that whatever decision on seat sharing will be made available to the media immediately.”

According to reports, Shiv Sena wants at least 130 seats for itself, while Republican Party of India (RPI) chief Ramdas Athawale wants 10 seats for his party in the NDA alliance in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra BJP Chief Chandrakant Patil confirmed that discussion on the alliance is at the last stage. “Those who are thinking that alliance will not happen are going to be disappointed,” he added.

“I am confident that we will get 220 seats in the upcoming assembly elections,” Patil stated.

The BJP currently has 122 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, while the Shiv Sena has 63 seats.
As far as seat sharing is concerned, Maharashtra BJP wants to maintain the status quo. It wants to retain its 122 seats, give 63 seats to the Shiv Sena and all the seats left after giving seats to smaller allies like RPI should be split equally between the BJP and Shiv Sena.

According to Shiv Sena sources, the party is seeking 135 seats from the BJP. The Thackeray-led party favours distribution of 135-135 seats between itself and the BJP. According to Shiv Sena, BJP can divide the remaining 18 seats among other allies.

Maharashtra will go for a single-phase election on October 21. Counting of votes will take place on October 24.
