Mayawati Urges EC To Curb Rising Use Of Religion During Elections

Mumbai: BSP chief Mayawati on Sunday expressed concern over the “increasing” use of religion during elections and urged Election Commission (EC) to “take serious steps to curb the narrow politics of selfishness”.

The former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh said that elections are affected by this and the whole country is worried about it.

Mayawati said that the Election Commission should take serious steps to check the narrow politics of selfishness as has become clear in the last few years.

The BSP chief’s remarks came a day after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath pointed to nearly 20 per cent Muslim population in Uttar Pradesh, saying the upcoming assembly elections would be 80 per cent versus 20 per cent.

Mayawati said that BJP will lose the upcoming elections if government machinery is not misused and EVMs are not tampered with and urged the Election Commission to keep a watch on it.

The BSP chief accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh of foisting a jungle raj through its biased policies, “Owing to the biased approach of the (BJP) government, a ‘jungle raj’ of criminals is prevailing… Due to this, the people of every caste and section are feeling very sad. A section of the upper caste, which had in the previous elections voted enthusiastically for the BJP, is feeling very sad,” Mayawati told reporters here, PTI reported.

The BSP chief further said that there has been a gross violation of the model code of conduct in organizing rallies and roadshows amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

She said that elections can be successful only when there is fear of the Election Commission in the government machinery also.

The BSP chief assured him that the “disciplined” BSP would strictly adhere to the model code of conduct, to which the party cadre would be directed separately.

Mayawati demanded that adequate arrangements should be made at the most sensitive booths for Dalits and weaker sections of the society to cast their votes.

Asking the people of Uttar Pradesh not to be misled by survey agencies that show the BSP to be “out of the race” till polling, Mayawati said: “In the 2007 UP assembly elections, the BSP was kept out of the electoral race. And it was shown that the SP and the BJP are in the polls.”

“However, when the results came, these parties were much behind us,” she added expressing confidence that the 2007 situation will be replicated this time.
