Modi Govt Clandestinely Implementing NRC Via NPR: Owaisi

Mumbai: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday lambasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the NRC issue, alleging that the BJP government had already started the work of creating a national registry through the National Population Register.

Speaking to reporters here, the Hyderabad MP also demanded that Modi clarify whether Union Home Minister Amit Shah had lied when he informed Parliament that the National Register of Citizens would be implemented.

When a nationwide NRC is done, every Indian gets in trouble. Five per cent of people in India do not even have passports. Can you imagine one hundred crore people standing in lines, who… who else will decide to prove my citizenship? The Prime Minister should also say.

He said that he is challenging the BJP to prove wrong that work on NRC has started through the National Population Register. Any lower-level official, Owaisi said, could be a mistake in NPR, which would eventually be escalated to NRC.

“Let the BJP prove me wrong, he said.

Owaisi said that he would bring a motion for breach of privilege against Amit Shah in Parliament if Modi said that the Home Minister made a wrong statement on NRC in the House. He claimed that the Prime Minister had also told a news channel that NRC would be implemented across the country.

“I don’t know why the Prime Minister is misleading the country. It is not from his office,” he said. He tried to know if it was the BJP’s strategy to fool the public and form different views on NRC.
