Monsoon, Landslide Death Toll Rises to 18 In Kerala

Mumbai : Kerala’s heavy rainfall and landslides killed 18 people in last 24 hours, confirmed disaster management officials.

Much of the incidents have been reported from Idukki district in Central Kerala with 10 deaths. Adimlai in Devikulam Taluk five members of a family were killed when their house washed off in a landslide.  The bodies have been reclaimed. Still, two are missing and two are reported to death in Devikulam Taluk. Further, three people were dead in separate incidents.

A family of five died due to landslide at Nilambur in Malappuram district. Following landslide one person is reported missing at Thamarassery in Kozhikode. Sixteen families were isolated following flash floods.

Local police and few department officials are recovering the dead bodies, clearing debris and evacuating people from affected areas. People from the affected areas are moved to a safer place.

An official stated that even a unit of NDRF and Army has been requested for relief efforts to save people from remote areas in Wayanad district. The disaster management authority has also called the Air Force for the support.
