NIA To Take Over Udaipur Murder Probe, International Links Will Be Investigated: Centre

Mumbai: The Ministry of Home Affairs has directed the NIA to take over the investigation of the murder of Kanhaiya Lal Teli committed in Udaipur yesterday, the Centre has said. The Union home ministry, in a statement, said the involvement of any organisation and international links will be thoroughly investigated.

The Udaipur murder in which two men stabbed a tailor and then posted videos of the heinous crime drew condemnation across the country. All political parties have condemned such violent incidents in the name of God.

The terror aspect of the case came to the fore after authorities suspected the involvement of an extremist group in a beheading style.

An NIA team was sent to Udaipur on Tuesday to get more details about the incident. The tailor was earlier arrested for his social media post in support of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

The full video of how the tailor was attacked was released online, along with a video in which two Muslim attackers claimed responsibility for the murder and even threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a knife. Both were arrested late Tuesday evening.

A senior official told Hindustan Times that the threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the video was another reason for joining the NIA.

The Hindustan Times reported interrogation of the two attackers, Riyaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad, revealed that both of them belonged to the Sufi-Barelvi sect of Sunni Islam and had close links with the Dawat-e-Islami in Karachi. They are believed to be self-radicalised.
