Omar Abdullah Asks Centre To Clarify Stance On Taliban; ‘Are They Terror Outfit Or Not?’

Mumbai: A day after India’s ambassador to Qatar Deepak Mittal met top Taliban leader Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanakzai, who also heads the Taliban’s political office in Doha, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah asked, “If they’ are a terrorist group, so why are you talking to them?’

Talking to the news agency, Omar said, “Either Taliban is a terror organization or not, please clarify to us how you see them. If they’re a terror group why are you talking to them? If not then will you (Centre) move to United Nations & have it delisted as a terror organisation? Make up your mind.”

Omar’s statement came after meeting India’s ambassador to Qatar Sher Mohammad Abbas Stankzai at the request of the Taliban side.

The discussion focused on the safety, security and speedy return of Indian nationals stranded in Afghanistan.

The issue of visits by Afghan nationals, especially minorities, who wanted to visit India also came up during the talks.

Ambassador Mittal expressed India’s concern that Afghan soil should not be used in any way for anti-India activities and terrorism and the Taliban representative assured that these issues would be addressed positively.
